Hi all!

Round 2 of the Belgian steamroller, here we are!

After a very close first round, I face Niels and his Crucible Guard army. We played this very same match up a week ago as a training session for this tournament. I managed to win it on clock after a long grind.

Our conclusion was that the game was pretty even (50/50 ish?) So i dropped S&D and my opponent logically dropped Syversto. Because our lists were almost the same, I expected to play a similar game. With one notable difference: I won the starting roll the last time.

This will not be the case this time. Logically because Niels benefits of a +1 to his starting roll and can re-roll it if needed. Turn out, the game is absolutely different when the CG starts. Watch out 😉

Deployement

Nothing special about this deployment. Except that I forgot to put Orin in front of the rocketmen, which means that he will be useless during this game.

Syvestro trun 1

He runs aggressively with all his army and his two Railless are basically in the middle of the table. Yep this is scary as hell.

Sturm and Drang turn 1

I have a choice to make here. Either I play aggressively, trying to hide behind the central house. Because whatever I do I will be in its threat range. Or I try to place only a few key pieces forward, protecting them as well as possible.

I decided to go on this second option because a too offensive position behind the central house means that I would be very packed. Which is not good at all with all his sprays, AOE’s and his feat available.

Scythe shoots the battle engine on the right and, with good rolls, damages it but puts herself in the threat range of Anastasia’s ambush. So I decide to leave Orin in ambush distance from on the other side, hoping that my opponent will kill him instead of my multi-fire elve.

I place Malvin (TK) and Gudrun behind the house. And I put a death archon aggressively behind a wall, with Vision, and within range of a shield guard. And I cast Deceleration of course.

Syvestro turn 2

Because I played defensively, my opponent is not going to have a busy turn.

He ambush anastasia who kills Orin, shoots my two heavy warbeasts for a few damages and my death archon (it won’t do a lot thanks to Vision). He positions himself aggressively on the left with his failed experiments and engage my death archon with one of them. He changes Admonition to his left Vindicator, which will protect him from Malvin.

Sturm and Drang turn 2

I can kill four of the five failed experiments, which would be great. If I kill the whole unit, my opponent will have to come with his caster to score the zone and given Malvin’s position, it can be very dangerous for him. I TK the death archon outside of the melee range of a FE. My road hog charges an FE and assault two others. Despite using all his fury, no FE will die. The Death archon will show him how to do it by killing three FE with the help of Annihilator and casting Mortal fear after that. In the center, my army is deployed behind the house which allows me to take a very active position on the table. I feat on both jacks. Finally, I try to protect my important pieces (Kogan, Death archon and Boomie) by hiding them behind a cloud. I contest the right zone with JAIMS.

Syvestro turn 3

It’s a feat turn for my opponent. He’s going to light up my two death archons. One because I had committed it and expected to lose it. And the other one because I hadn’t protected him well with the cloud. He will also shoot my war hog and my road hog and Anastasia charges the beast making very good damages.

He will have very bad dice rolls with his rocketmens and leave JAIMS alive but killing Scythe who was however much more complicated to hit. Find out … Because of JAIMS, he doesn’t score the zone. Finally, he will move forward with his mentalist and cast Psychokinetic Shield in order to be annoying for the next round (no charges within 5 ‘). He’s going to score a point.

Syvestro turn 3

It’s been a long time since def skew lists are gone from the game. I will discover during this game that the CG’s CID has brought them back, especially with the Mentalist. My plan is to kill the battle engine and the vindicator on the right and kill some rocketmens thanks to Kogan and Gundrun. To get there I Tk boomie with the gatorman soul slave. Then Boomie charges the mentalist to clear the way and avoid the Psychokinetic Shield effect. He shot down the rocketmens to help Kogan and JAIMS to hit. It was kind of greedy because the troll will miss his two attacks on the mentalist. I should definitely put the mat fixer on her. So I have to send Kogan to kill the same mentalist in order to make room for my War hog to charge the battle engine. Kogan just kills her but spends three corpses in order to do that. After that, my battle boar put Primal on the War hog. I’ll put puppet master on the same model with the pot. I activate S&D, TK my War Hog and cast Decceleration. My War hog kills the already damaged battle engine. He goes Overtake on the Vindicator and also kill him. JAIMS missed all the attacks on the rocketmens. My Road Hog kill Anastasia but was too far away to Overtake to the last FE witch was my plan. Because of that, i had to come to the zone with Malvin and Mayhem pushing the red button. He easily killed the FE but misses all the attack on the Mentalist (do you see a recurring theme coming here?).   Nobody scores.

Syvestro turn 4

I offered Malvin and Mahyem on a plate to my opponent. He will smash my poor jack with his battle engine and his Vindicator. This will allow him to score the zone with the remaining failed experiment. In the center, he will contest the zone with Alyce and on the right, he will kill JAIMS but failed to kill Bommie under decel.

Sturm and drang turn 4

I’m going into Drang form this turn. My war hog frenzy in the objective. Kogan charges the objective and killed it with the corpse of the mentalist. Boomie and Gundrun try to kill rocketmen but even with Shoot down on them, they will not be able to kill any of them. On the left, in want to send my road hog on the Vindicator. So i heal the beast with S&D, i cast killing ground to have pathfinder, i cast Primal with the battle boar and… i totally forget about the Mentalist ability. What a bummer. So my Road Hog advances and smashes the remaining Failed experiment facing certain death next turn.

Syvestro turn 5

My opponent’s clock is low so he have to play fast. He will find a line of sight with his Vindicator to charge my War Hog, and with transmutation, kill him. But he can’t contest the zone. Alyce go big and smash Kogan but failed to kill him. He will finish my Road hog with his railless and he will fail to kill Boomie and Gudrun with the rocketmens. Nobody score, once again.

Sturm and Drang turn 5

I have a 10 minutes advantage on clock. If i want to find a way to win this, it’s now or never.

And… I play a little bit too fast here. I activate Kogan and he smash big Alyce, realising that if i smite her, she will be in the way of an incoming charge from Boomie. So Kogan will just do some damage and i will not score the zone. Boomie will disengage thanks to a TK from the soul slave and charge the Vindicator. I was hoping to cripple some system here, pretty likely with amputation from boomie, but he will fail his charge attack even with “Shout down” on the jack, making just a few damages on his second attack. Sad. There is no mecanics in my opponent list. Gudrun will failed to kill any rocketmens and my pot plus my battle boar constet the zone. Noboby score again.

Syvestro turn 6

Vindicator and Alyce kill Boomie and Kogan. Railless kill my battle boar. My opponent don’t have the time to activate his roketmens. He give me the turn with only 2 minutes on his clock.

Sturm and Drang turn 6

This is the hail of honnor. I go into Drand form and charge the railless with my caster.  If i kill it, i can score the zone and hope to reach a tie. But on dices minus 4, the battle engine will not die. Nobody scores.

Syvestro turn 7

Vindicator kills the objective with his gun, Alyce jump in the back of the Soul slave, kill him and my opponent can score two points with a few seconds remaining on his clock. Game over.

Sturm and drang turn 7

I kill the battle engine with Drang but this is too late. My opponent win the game. GG!

These battle reports are so hard. They point out to me all the little mistakes I may have made in this game. But it was a great game and my opponent managed to capitalize on his strengths. Well done on his part. For my part, I really love Sturm and Drang. The caster is flexible, resilient, and very fun to play.

Crucible guard are soooo good now! Vindicator are amazing, as the battle engine and the failed experiment. But it’s clearly the mentalists who bothered me the most during this game.

However, I play a list with multiple MAT fixer, I can only imagine the difficulties that other lists may experience when faced with CG. Def 17, 16 everywhere…

And you, what do you think of this CID?
