Hi all !

Third round of the Belgian steamroller. After losing my last game, I find myself confronted with Marvin, who has just lost against Benoît, who will win the tournament (GG to him :-))

Like me, he decided to choose his caster randomly at the start of the tournament. He ran into Thexus while I drew Sturm and Drang. Surprisingly, the two caster are very similar: TK, Decceleration. He paired the list with Aurora 2 while I choose Barnabas 2.

I really want to choose Barnabas for this game as I have only played Sturm and Drang so far. But I think this scenario is just unplayable for him since this caster likes to play in a bubble. So I chose Sturm and Drang.

Both his lists scare me. He is going to choose Thexus because he believes Barnabas 2’s high defense could be a problem for Aurora. I am not sure I agree with this opinion. But, well, let’s jump into the game.

Deployement

He won the roll and decided to go second. He chooses the bottom side with a particularly interesting forest. His Cephalyx unit goes into ambush. JAIMS picks the Wrecker as the prey while the Croes picks one of my death archons.

Sturm and Drang first turn

I play as aggressive as possible in order to take a lot of space on the table. TK from S&D and Malvin. Vision on one of the death archons, Polarity shield on Malvin. I leave Orin within 3′ of M&M to avoid jokes with Hex Blast. But with his feat, he can easily get around that.

Thexus turn 1

He plays very cautiously. Asphy 4 and a Toro occupy a flank. They threaten my linving models at 16 inches. It’s scary. For the rest, he places his stuffs and  stay out of treath ranges. He makes sure that all of his important models remain within range of a possible TK channel through his monstrosities.

Sturm and Drang turn 2

He left nothing in my threat range. I do not know what to do. I try to position myself in such a way that I am as high as possible on the table without putting myself in too much danger. Between his feat and his TK etc. it is extremely complicated. He left nothing in the threat range. I do not know what to do. I try to position myself in such a way that I am as high as possible on the table without putting myself in too much danger. Between his feat and his TK etc. it is extremely complicated. My gobber contest the zone. Gudrun, who is not very important in this match up, contests the flag trying to stay behind the wall. Finally, my Battle boar baits his Toro with a war hog waiting behind to counter-attack. He could score three points on the next turn, but I’m not sure how I could have positioned myself otherwise without losing too much of my army next turn.

Turn 2 Thexus

Positioning yourself while avoiding all TKs and other shenanigans is complicated. He begins by sending his Wraith machine to Malvin and Mahyem. He takes possession of it and hits Orin who dies. Totally forgot about this rules. Then he sends his Void to kill Gundrun who can then teleport and kill Scythe by positioning himself behind the central wall. His grunt entered in ambush do not manage to kill the gobber and he sends the Toro who after a TK finds a position which allows him to hit the battle boar without the penalty of the wall. He logically kills him. He then activates the rest of his army to kill the gobber with shooting but being engaged, he cannot kill it. He scores two points.

Turn 3 Sturm and Drang

I have a good run for an assassination this turn. But I can also kill a good part of his army.

I hesitate for a long time, but since I am two behind on the scenario and I will probably run out of models to contest the left zone, I decide to go for the assassination.

I can send Malvin to his caster. I need to kill the Wraith machine, TK Malvin with the soul slave, and charge the pistol wraith in the forest. After killing him with Malvin’s less powerful attack, he can killing spree on his caster which only camps two focus. I put puppet master on Malvin with the cauldron. The Death Archon kills the Wraith Machine and i activate Malvin. When the dust settles, Thexus is on one box. I’m desperately looking for a way to take that last hp away from him, but I can’t find it.

You know, in this kind of frustrating situation, don’t hesitate to take a few minutes’ break. Otherwise you make big mistakes. And that’s what’s going to happen.

I chose to kill as many models as possible to compensate for this fiasco. Sturm and Drang TK the death archon who killed the Wraith machine because he was in the way. I TK a Kogan full on corpses who charges the void archon, smites him into the wall and kills him easily. He then receives Hoof it from Boomie in order to reposition himself on the flag.

I charge with JAIMS. She kills Croes and engages the second Void and contest the zone. I still have two important activations to deal with. The charge of my Road hog in a wrecker and the charges of my War Hog in the Toro. I start with the Road Hog which kills a Croes with its assault spray and leaves the wrecker at 9 boxes.

But I realize that I’m going to have a hard time keeping targets for my transfers. If he charges the toro, my war ends up exactly 14 inches from my caster. With his feat, he can easily get him out of control. And if I don’t charge with my beast, the Toro will kill the war hog the next turn. I have to charge. And my only remaining target for transfers is therefore the road hog, which has already spent three focus and is in the middle of the enemy lines. Great.

So, I don’t spend the last focus with the road hog and charges with my War hog which does good damage to the Toro. I place my Death archon with Mortal fear in order to prevent charging lanes and I pass the clock by scoring one and contesting everywhere.

Turn 3 – Thexus

He can kill me in a thousand different ways. First, he kills my road hog which is my last source of transfer. Then he feat, place my army. He cast influences on Boomie and Kogan who hit my caster and finish me off with a Hex blast. GG!

Conclusion

I did not expect such a complicated game. It looks like Thexus is doing more or less the same as Sturm and Drang but a little better. First, because he has a feat (please PP, just add monstruosity in the S&D feat description …) second, because he can channel his spells quite easily, which is clearly missing in the S&D toolbox. I really like my opponent’s list, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it frequently in tournaments because it is very strong.

Then my reaction was pretty stupid. I clearly should have played more carefully with my caster. His caster was at one hp with a jack arm 20 and 32 boxes in the face. Even if i was down on scenario and attrition, I could have found a way to take the last remaining hp away from him. A good lesson for the future and a very nice game. Well done Marvin!
