Brawlmachine battle report – Barnabas 2 vs Asphyxious 3

Hi all!

The third round of the Belgian brawlmachine tournament. We are three undefeated players. I’ve found myself in the final thanks to my SOS and the VP and controls points I scored in the two first rounds.

I play against Tim and his Cryx, a well known player in the warmachine community and a very strong opponent. He chooses Asphyxious 3 and Goreshade 3 for this tournament.

I drop Barni, and he drops Asphyxious for this game. I can’t drop Helga against Groshade because the feat is too annoying for my champs and he can’t really choose Asphy because the base of his list is 20 points of banes riders and i have rebuke. “Loosing” 20 pts of models in a 25 points game looks like a horrible idea. So Asphy 3. I haven’t faced this caster for years, let’s see what happens.

I won the rolls and logically decided to play first. My sapper goes to ambush and I placed my mine, hoping that this time, it will be useful (spoiler alert: it won’t).

First turn – Barni

I have two important models in my army: Kogan and my Wrastler. I just can’t handle the huge amount of Armor of my opponent pieces without those models. My problem is that I reaaaaalllly want to install Kogan behind the central forest. There, he will be able to control all the centrum of the map by himself. But, if he goes there, Ol’Grim can shoot him. And i really don’t want that.

Because of this, I played carefully with my Tharn and the rest of my army run as far as they can.

Turn 1 – Asphy

Warmachine is like chess: always occupies the center!

Because I didn’t use the forest to my advantage, my opponent decides to do it. He placed his Inflictor just behind the forest with Ashen Veil in a commanding position. He cast Mobility and advance as much as possible with all his pieces.

Turn 2 – Barni 2

I can cast Hunter’s Mark on the Slayer and charge the jack with Kogan on three corpses and puppet master. But if I do that, Barni is in range of the inflictor. I decided that I didn’t want to go for that – maybe because I judge that it’s kind of awkward to lose on a Ktc bottom of 2 in one of my very few final. So I did my best to contest the two zones with stuffs: feralgheist on the left and gobber on the right. Barni cast Execretion and camp 5 and the death archon come just behind the forest with Def 16. He can score 3 but he have to commit a lot to do that.

Asphy 3 – turn 2

I never really realized that brawlmachine rewards aggressive play a lot. And that’s exactly what Tim will do: running in my face with all his jacks and feat with Asphy. The Seether kill my gobber, the Slayer will run aggressively to score the zone after Ol’Grim killed my feralgeist, cankerworm is running in the middle, and the Inflictor advance through the forest and kill my archon with very good rolls. He kills my other gobber with his spell slave and passes me the clock scoring three points.

Barnabas 2 – turn 3

I can kill almost all his army but if I do it, I’ll lose on scenario.

How to avoid this? I can score my flag and the left zone. But I can’t contest his flag (Gundrun is 16,1 from the flag so 0,1 too far away). Contesting his zone with something big like the Wrastler is not a good idea because Asphy will be on 1000 focus after my turn and he will easily remove any pieces in the zone. My only way to win this is to put unkillable models in his zone. So the Sapper enter on the table! The only thing he has to do is to kill Vociferon. Asphy can’t reach my pig because he’s stealth, so Vociferon is the only one that could kill him next turn. But my sapper failed to kill the Asphy 3 companion.

Ok, this plan failed, it’s time to kill stuff.

On the left, Kogan charges the Slayer, doing very good damage, and smite him on Cankerworm with his last attack, putting the two jack knockdown. The boneswarm advance in the melee range of cankerworm, taking big free strike from the Inflictor and killed cankerworm. So I score one for the left zone. After that, Barni and his unit charge the Inflictor, using a bone shaker to prevent any contercharge from the Seether. After spending 7 fury and mediocre rolls, I killed the slayer and damage the Inflictor. But I have an important choice: I still have my wrastler. But he needs pathfinder to reach the Seether. I can buy a last attack  on the Inflictor and cast onslaught but 1) I won’t camp 2) I need a big number to kill the jack. So I decided to kill the Inflictor with my wrastler, leaving the Seether alone. But he will be able to reach my wrastler next turn. I score 2 and my opponent score 1.

Asphy 3 – turn 3

He needs to score two and contest my flag. His necrotech will move within 4′ of my flag and this last objective is already fulfill. After that, he activates Asphy. He cast Calamity on my Wrastler and mobility. This will allow his Vociferon to move in the back-arc of my sapper and cast a hellfire, killing the farrow. The seether charges the crocodile and kills him. Ol’Grim will kill my boneswarm will very good rolls (that was not important because whatever happens, the zone was contested by his machine wraith). He scores two and the game finish on a 6 – 2 win for Tim.

What a bloody game! I’m not disappointed with my own game, but my opponent just made fewer mistakes than me. That’s what Warmachine is all about right? So well done to Tim who wins this tournament. I’ll finish in 4th place, missing the podium once again.

I also discovered how interesting it is to play aggressively on scenario on Brawlmachine. Since the scenario ends at 4 points and there are fewer models on the table to contest, very aggressive gameplay is rewarded. Tim showed me that perfectly.
