I’ve mentionned in my previous battle report that i reaaaaaally want to play some “real life” games.

Well, we are not there yet in Belgium. But it’s very close: I’ll play my first physical tournament end of august. I’ve painted an Everblight army during the lockdown and it’s finally time to put those models on the table !

So, when a new online warmachine tournament was organized in my meta, I didn’t hesitate and i choose to go with my Blight army.

I choose Kryssa and Bethayne 2. I like Everblight beast and with the addition of the blight archon, the two casters work very well with beast. Additionally, Bethayne 2 completes Kryssa pretty well even if i still don’t know how i can deal with big gunlines like Crucible guard, Scyrah, or Gunny 2.

The format is an original one. Basically, it’s a brawlmachine game with 50 points and the standard steamroller scenario.

These is the lists I choose to play:

For my first round, I play against Jean, a friend of mine. Funny thing: he plays Krueger 2. For my first game with Blight, I’ll face the caster I’ve played the most in my warmachine journey.

I know that K2 is a very difficult match up for Blight in general. And the addition of two Death archons makes it worst.  I’ve picked Bethayne 2 because I really want to have a tool to counter Krueger’s feat and Hellmouth are great pieces against Krueger shenanigans.

Deployement

I’ve lost the starting rolls and my opponent choose to go first. So I decided to deploy on the top side. The idea was to deny the two very good forests for Kogan and Scythe, but in the process, I didn’t calculated how annoying this Windswept terrain is for my list.

Krueger 2 – first turn

Running and staying outside of my threat ranges. The croc pot get three corpses and gives two to the death archons on the right and the woldwarden on the right is teleported forward.

Bethayne 2 – turn 1

I can’t really respect the double TK threat range because if I do, I’ll be too far away on the table. So Golab takes a commanding position in the centrum protected by a cloud and Transmutation. My Blight archon put Dragon’s blood on the most exposed Hellmouth, the right one. Dissolve on the Seraph and all my army move in such a way that only one Death archon could reach my important pieces.

Krueger 2 – turn 2

My opponent will send a fully loaded Death archon to kill my Hellmouth. He has to suffer a free strike on the way, but I miss my target. The Hellmouth die and he cast mortal feat. On the right, after multiple Gallow and shoot, all the tentacles will die. He will advance cautionary in the centrum and he will not feat.

Bethayne 2 – turn 2

I have a pretty cool plan to score two points and make serious damages. But I need some luck to do it.

And it will start pretty well with the activation of Bethayne that kill Kogan with an arc nodded Breath of Corruption. After that, my Seraph has to hit the Death archon to reduce his def and arm and be absolutely sure that the Carnivean will kill the archon. I roll a 3 on the d3 shots but my dices will fail me and I will miss my first two boosted attacks. I decide to boost the last one. I’ll hit, but I’ll not be able to Slipstream Golab.

The plan was to send the Raek to make some damages to the Woldwarden on the left and stay there in order to give finisher to Golab and be annoying. And then send Golab to finish the beast and sprint back to score the left zone. Because Golab can’t reach the warden, the Raek will just stay in the left zone and will score it.

Now, my Bligth archon has to spray the Gobber that my opponent put on the flag, so my Sorceress on helion can run and score it. But despite the boost, I’ll miss the gobber. My turn finish on this disappointing note, scoring only one and making way less damage than expected.

Krueger 2 – turn 3

Because of my previous failures, my opponent has a big turn coming on the attrition and the scenario side of the game. A warden easily kills my raek, the other one charges and kills my objective. But he won’t be able to score the zone because the Hellmouth is still alive. Scythe kills the sorceress and the very alive gobber stays on the flag to score it. The three stones come in the zone to score. The right woldwarden charges my Carnivean but despite hitting all his unboosted six, armor 22 (spiny + dragon’s blood) is just too much for the poor beast. Still, Krueger will feat and push my carni away allowing his beast to score the zone.

Krueger 2 – 4

Bethayne 2 – 1

Bethayne 2 – turn 3

It’s counter feat time! My main objective is to be sure that I’ll not lose on scenario next turn while putting all my models in an agressive position to prepare the turn after feat. The carnivean kills the warden in front of him and then uses spiny growth. Golab kills the objective and sprint away and my Seraph shoots some stones while contesting the central flag. Bethayne feat but I’ll forget that she doesn’t have pathfinder. So I can’t put her in the commanding position I calculated, instead. She moves around the forest, staying too far away from the action. My hellmouth continue to contest but i couldn’t put feat on it.

Krueger 2 – 4

Bethayne 2 – 3

Krueger 2 – turn 4

Bethayne 2 feat is soooooo good. This turn, my opponent objective is to clear the left zone and the central flad in order to score three points. But i’ll not be able to kill my Seraph in the middle after his death archon missed his second attack – that would have made my beast stationary. And I will spread all the damages. A blacklad stoneshapper runs to contest the right zone and he will score one while I’ll not score.

Bethanye 2 – 3

Krueger 2 – 5

Bethayne 2 – turn 4

I’m pretty happy with my position right now. I have a good lead on attrition, and I can come back on scenario.

But I have two big problems:

– not much clock

– he still has a lot of solos. They can easily contest the right zone while I can’t do the same for the left zone.

So, I decided to go for an assassination run. The plan is the following:

– Seraph shoots and put – 2 arm and – 2 def on Krueger.

– Bethayne slipstream Golab, shoot a gobber in the way, and cast spells on Krueger through the Carnivean.

– Mekanoshredder put Fullsteam on Golab.

– Golab charges for free the croc pot and tries to kill Krueger 2 with his six remaining attacks. Krueger 2 camps 3.

On paper, the plan looks cool. But the Seraph missed his threshold test.

It suddenly became a very dicey assassination runs, but with my few remaining minutes on clock, i have to go on.

After that, Bethayne missed the boosted 8 needed to kill the gobber. She Slipstream Golab and finally hit the gobber with a breath of corruption. After that, i killed my carnivean to win back D3+1 fury but hey, how can cast spells without my arc node? Bethayne finished the activation.

Finally, Golab charges and basically missed all his six attacks on Krueger. I passed the clock with only a few seconds remaining, and my opponent just has to clean his zone and kill my Seraph to score his zone and his flag to win the game. GG.

Conclusion

This game was so fun. Well played Jean.

Starting a new faction is rough. I’ve lost so much time because of rules I forgot. Let’s call that experience.

I’ve made some mistakes here. The first one was my feat. After the death of Kogan and the death archon, i should have feated aggressively and put all my army in the face of my opponent. Between my high def and the mat 6 of his beast, i was pretty safe. And i could have killed all his army the next turn. The second mistake was that i’ve underestimated the impact of the Windswept on my models.

See you all !
